Composite Fillings

What are Composite (White) Fillings?

What is a Cavity?

White fillings, also known as composite fillings, are a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to fill in cavities and restore decayed teeth. They provide excellent durability and resistance for small to midsize fillings. They withstand moderate pressure from constant chewing, and they provide a natural look. Because of their tooth-like color, they are used in cosmetic dentistry to change the color of the teeth or reshape disfigured teeth.

Technically speaking, a cavity is a space in your tooth that has been caused by decay. Tooth decay is damage to the enamel of the tooth caused by plaque bacteria. This decay eats away tooth enamel until a hole is formed. If a cavity isn’t addressed early enough, it can continue to develop and end up affecting the entire tooth as well as other adjacent teeth and even their roots. Getting a filling stops a cavity from growing and prevents further decay.

Benefits of White Fillings

White fillings have a lot of benefits such as:

  • They are durable.
  • They provide good resistance to fracture.
  • They can be used on both front and back teeth.
  • They are a good choice when the cavity is minor.
  • They can be used on small to medium cavities.
  • They provide the most subtle type of restoration by blending in with your tooth and giving a natural look.
  • They don’t damage the tooth structure as they require less drilling.
  • White fillings bond to your tooth structure and give further support to your tooth.
  • They cause fewer instances of tooth sensitivity.
  • White fillings can be repaired.
  • They can be used to fix chips and tooth cracks.

BEFORE & AFTER

Are Composite Fillings Covered by Insurance?

Possibly! Every insurance policy is different, and coverage varies from plan to plan. At Craft Smiles we will gladly look over your personal policy and discuss your coverage with you.

How Does Cavity Filling Work?

Cavity filling may sound unappealing, but it is very important if you want to prevent further decay and maintain good oral health. If a cavity is left untreated, it will damage the tooth and lead to other dental health issues. There are several steps required to fill a cavity. Here are the steps for the procedure:

  • Numbing the area being treated– We will place a numbing substance on your gums, teeth, cheek, and all surrounding area of the tooth. In some cases, we may also use local anesthesia. The anesthesia will numb your gums and your jaw around the tooth. You may also be able to use nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Sedation Dentistry will help you relax if you are feeling anxious about the procedure.
  • Drill Out Decay – Once the tooth and the surrounding area is numb, your dentist will drill out the decay, clean the tooth and prepare it for filling.
  • Cavity Filling – The cavity filling is placed into the drilled area and sealed. They are placed in layers and eventually fill out the cavity. Each layer is placed and shaped. A bright ultraviolet light is used to harden it quickly.

What Happens After Treatment?

After the treatment, your mouth will stay numb for a few hours. Be careful while drinking as you may spill. Try not to chew to avoid accidentally injuring your cheek or tongue.
