How Does Cavity Filling Work?
Cavity filling may sound unappealing, but it is very important if you want to prevent further decay and maintain good oral health. If a cavity is left untreated, it will damage the tooth and lead to other dental health issues. There are several steps required to fill a cavity. Here are the steps for the procedure:
- Numbing the area being treated– We will place a numbing substance on your gums, teeth, cheek, and all surrounding area of the tooth. In some cases, we may also use local anesthesia. The anesthesia will numb your gums and your jaw around the tooth. You may also be able to use nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Sedation Dentistry will help you relax if you are feeling anxious about the procedure.
- Drill Out Decay – Once the tooth and the surrounding area is numb, your dentist will drill out the decay, clean the tooth and prepare it for filling.
- Cavity Filling – The cavity filling is placed into the drilled area and sealed. They are placed in layers and eventually fill out the cavity. Each layer is placed and shaped. A bright ultraviolet light is used to harden it quickly.
What Happens After Treatment?
After the treatment, your mouth will stay numb for a few hours. Be careful while drinking as you may spill. Try not to chew to avoid accidentally injuring your cheek or tongue.
